From the moment we decide to have a cat, we also take on the responsibility of taking care of them, including their physical and emotional well-being. After all, we spend so much time together, and in many ways, they become just like a member of the family.

So, how to make a cat happy? Today, I want to share a few simple things I do at home to help my cat stay happy and comfortable.

1. How to Make a Cat Happy Every Day?

Spend Time With Your Cat:

Take a little time every day to simply be with your cat and let them decide how close they want to be. If they want to curl up on your stomach, let them. If they would rather lie nearby or snuggle by your feet, that’s perfectly fine too.

Create a Comfortable Environment:

Cats have very sensitive hearing and a strong sense of smell, so keeping the environment calm can help them feel more comfortable. I also like to play some relaxing music because it can make the atmosphere feel more pleasant for both of us.

I didn’t realize how sensitive cats can be to sounds, smells, and changes around the house until I started paying more attention. FelineVMA also recommends giving cats a safe, familiar environment where they can have some choice and control.

When I’m cooking in the kitchen, I usually have some soft music or the TV playing in the background. My cat Nuonuo seems to enjoy staying in her little bed and listening while I do my thing.

Give Small Treats in Moderation:

When you come home after work or being out for a while, you can give your cat one of their usual treats. Just remember to keep the amount reasonable. You can also occasionally switch up the flavors or types of treats to give your cat a little variety.

2. How to Make a Cat Happy in a New Home?

How to Help Your Cat Get Used to a New Home:

First, let your new cat explore the home at their own pace and get familiar with the different corners. If there are places you don’t want them to go, make sure to block them off. Most importantly, let your cat feel that the new environment is safe and that you’re friendly.

Spending Time Together on the First Night:

The first night in a new home can be a little unsettling for a cat. I recommend preparing a warm, cozy bed near your own bed and adding a soft blanket. This way, your cat can smell you, hear your voice, and see you nearby. It can help them slowly understand, “This is my home.”

Take It Slow With the First Interaction:

Don’t rush into close contact when your cat first arrives. Wait for them to approach you, and then try playing with a wand toy or another toy. I remember the first time I played with my cat, she was still a little shy. But after I played with the wand toy for a while, she started having so much fun.

3. How to Make a Cat Happy in a Small Apartment?

Unused corners around the house can actually make great little spaces for your cat. With just a few small changes, you can create a cozy little area your cat will love.

Here are some ideas from the resting and play area we set up for our cat:

How to Make a Cat Happy in a Small Apartment

● Install staggered wall shelves to give your cat more room to climb while also making the shelves easier to clean and less likely to collect scratches.

● A corner cat tree can be a great option even in a small apartment. It gives cats separate paths to move around while still allowing them to stay close to each other.

● Place the cat tree near a south-facing window, with a storage cabinet and a cat bed nearby. It’s a cozy little spot for a cat to relax.

● Create an open cat walkway higher up on the wall. It can work as a small shelf for everyday use while also giving your cat another place to step and climb.

Keep some areas enclosed so your cat has little spaces to crawl into. Cats often enjoy hiding in small spaces, and having these cozy spots can make them feel more comfortable.

4. How to Make a Cat Happy by Petting?

① Back Grooming:

Gentle strokes: Follow the direction of your cat’s fur and gently stroke along their back with your palm or fingers, starting from the head and moving toward the tail. It can feel a little like the grooming cats do with each other.

You can also use a cat brush while you’re at it. I gently brush my cat’s fur, and if I find a small tangle, I spray a little detangling spray, wait for a moment, and then gently work it out. My cat seems to really enjoy it.

② Gentle Face Massage:

Cradle the cheeks: With your palms facing upward, gently hold your cat’s cheeks with both hands and lightly massage them with your fingertips. Just remember to avoid sensitive areas like the eyes and nose.

③ Gentle Full-Body Massage:

Gentle strokes around the base of the tail: Don’t forget the base of the tail. You can gently stroke the fur with your fingers, and your cat may even move their tail a little because it feels good.

Belly rubs: When your cat chooses to lie down and show their belly, you can try giving it a gentle rub, but always pay attention to their reaction. Some cats are happy to show their belly but don’t actually want you to touch it.

5. How to Comfort a Cat When They’re Unhappy?

① Your Cat Doesn’t Want to Be Held

Possible reason: It may simply be your cat’s personality, or the way they’re being held may not feel comfortable.

What to do:

Learn how to hold your cat properly by supporting their body with your hands and letting them rest against you. This can help them feel more secure.

Choose a calm moment when your cat is relaxed and comfortable. Avoid picking them up while they’re eating, sleeping, or happily playing.

② Their Fur Is Standing Up and Their Back Is Arched

Possible reason: Your cat may be frightened, involved in a conflict with another cat, or feeling that their space is being threatened.

What to do:

Give your cat a quiet, safe place where they can calm down on their own.

Don’t deliberately go looking for them. Instead, make sure food and water are available.

Try to figure out what caused the reaction so you can avoid the same situation happening again.

③ Their Tail Is Hanging Low

Possible reason: Your cat may be scared, frightened, or feeling stressed.

What to do:

Give your cat a safe, private space and avoid disturbing them.

Set up a few hiding spots, such as a cat tree or cardboard box, so they have somewhere to retreat and feel secure.

④ Your Cat Shows Aggressive Behavior

Possible reason: Your cat may feel threatened, be uncomfortable, or simply be showing play aggression.

What to do:

Don’t use your hands or feet when playing with your cat. Use a wand toy or another appropriate toy instead.

Keep petting sessions gentle and stop as soon as your cat seems uncomfortable.

Never hit your cat. It can damage the trust and relationship between you and your cat.

6. How to Make a Cat Less Anxious?

Provide Enough Food and Water:

Make sure your cat has enough food and fresh water, and keep the litter box clean. When your cat’s basic needs are taken care of, they can feel more secure and you can feel more at ease too.

Provide Plenty of Toys and Climbing Spaces:

Give your cat a variety of toys and add some vertical space around the home so they can climb, jump, and explore. This can also help keep them from feeling bored or lonely.

Leave Your Scent Behind:

Leaving a piece of clothing that smells like you can help your cat feel that you’re still nearby, which may give them a little extra sense of security.

7. Frequently Asked Questions

What Makes a Cat Feel Happy?

Feeling your care and companionship can mean a lot to a cat. Even if you don’t have much time, spending a little time each day playing with your cat using toys or a wand can make them happy.

When your cat wants some alone time, give them a quiet environment and enough space, along with plenty of food, fresh water, and other essentials. An occasional small treat can also make them feel pretty satisfied.

What Is the “3-3-3” Rule for Cats?

The cat “3-3-3 rule” can be simply understood as three stages of settling into a new home:

The first 3 days: Help your cat feel safe. They may hide, so don’t rush to disturb them.

The first 3 weeks: Let them slowly become familiar with their new surroundings, their owner, and their daily routine.

The first 3 months: They gradually become more relaxed and start to truly feel at home.

Every cat adjusts at a different pace, so there’s no need to follow the timeline too strictly. Giving your cat enough space, time, and patience is more important.
